In April, 1904, J. E. Murfee, Sr., and his son, George W. Murfee, formed the partnership of J. E. Murfee & Son. In 1914, J. L. Murfee, Sr. came into the firm after his brother, George W. Murfee left to get into the lumber business. J. L. Murfee, Sr. left to join the army during World War I. After he was discharged, he again entered the business with his father.
J. E. Murfee, Sr. was semi-retired for several years before his death in 1938, but the firm was carried on by his son and partner, J. L. Murfee, Sr. dba J. E. Murfee & Son.
Wm. E. Murfee, Sr. joined the firm with his father, J. L. Murfee, Sr. in 1946. J. L. Murfee, Sr. retired from active participation in the firm in 1974 and in 1976, the sons of Wm. E. Murfee, Sr., being Wm. E. Murfee, Jr. and R. Lance Murfee, became solicitors.
In 1988, Wm. E. Murfee, Sr., Dolores Murfee, Wm. E. Murfee, Jr. and Lance Murfee along with Joan Carnes formed a corporation which continues to do business as J. E. Murfee & Son.
J. E. Murfee & Son has been operated continuously by the Murfee family since 1904 making it the oldest business in Lubbock owned and operated by the same family.
